2018 Bay Gelding
by Charm Spirit (Ire) ex Columella (GB) ( Kyllachy (GB) )
Charm Spirit was twice a Group 1 winner over one mile winning the Prix Moulin at Longchamp and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. He has made a great start to his stallion career siring winners of over a hundred races, several of them black type performers. Columella won twice as a 2 year old over 5 and 7 furlongs and she has already produced two 2 year old winners. He is bred to be and looks every inch a 2 year old. At 3,000 gns he looks well bought. He was not particularly well presented at the Sales and has already started to improve massively whilst being broken in. He is Plus 10 qualified and is one of three horses in the Rowdown 2020 Nursery, overarching details, including costings, are here.
If youfollow this link you can see him on the move at the end of November. And here he is working between Arlecchino's Leap and the Bay Warrior on the morning of 7th April.
His three runs in Maiden company, at five and six furlongs, prepared him for Nursery handcaps and he ran in the first of these, over seven furlong at Kempton in the second week of August, and he finished a running on fourth; he progressed from that run to be second, again over seven furlongs, at Lingfield at the end of August; he is a quietly progressive horse who should continue to improve.
After a slight setback at the stalls at Kempton and a run on heavy ground at Leicester, something that did not really suit, he found the Chelmsford version of the polytrack much more to his liking to win a competitive eight furlong Nursery, battling back under Charlie Bennett, in the second week of November. He then followed up, coming from a long way back, to win an extended eight furlong Nursery at Wolverhampton in the third week of November.
We were delighted to see him complete a spiffing hatrick in Nurseries, winning quite decisively at Wolverhampton just before Christmas, the video of which you can see here.
He then made a brave bid for a four timer over Wolverhampton's extended nine furlongs, leading inside the final furlong before just being run out of it close home; there is fair chance he would have held on with a better draw. After a short break he returned to Wolverhampton at the end of March and powered home under a fine ride from Charlie Bennett, who has struck up a fine relationship with him.
